It can be difficult to watch someone you love and care about struggle with their mental health. It can be even worse when you're certain they can benefit from getting professional help and therapy.

If you want to convince someone to seek therapy, try the following tips, and keep in mind that the topic of seeking therapy is still a sensitive one for a lot of people.

Remember that you can't force someone to consult a therapist or benefit from therapy, unless they seek and believe it can really help them. So avoid being too pushy and let them get to it at their own pace.

1. Choose the right time and place

X During a fight

✓: When they are in a good mood

2. Use gentle and not condescending words:

X: “You’re crazy, you need therapy!”

✓: “have you considered talking to a specialist?”

3. Explain why you're suggesting therapy:

✓: "I want you to feel better"

✓: "I love and care about you"

4. Share your own experience with therapy:

✓: "It was scary at first, but so worth it"

✓: "It’s a judgement-free and safe space"

5. Destigmatize therapy:

✓: Explain why mental health is as important as physical health

✓: "Seeking therapy doesn’t mean you’re weak; it means you love yourself and want to get better."

6. Offer practical support:

✓: Offer to guide them through booking a session

✓: Offer to go with them to the first appointment and wait outside

✓: Suggested online therapy
